Part A Activity Prompt #2

SUMMARY

This activity prompt will guide trainers through a participatory activity to understand the various vector data types and how they are presented in real life scenarios.

TIMING

60 minutes total

MATERIALS

Aerial photographs (Printed hardcopies or projected on a screen)
Flipchart
Assorted marker or pens

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Explain the purpose of this activity and divide the participants into groups. Each group should have at least 3 people with equal representation of gender, if possible.

2. Project or give each group the aerial photos provided.

3. Activity: Ask each group to discuss amongst themselves and note down on flipcharts the following:

a. The context of the map, giving reasons as to the the context of the area presented in the map (urban or rural)
b. Imagine you were to digitize the aerial photos: in each photo, giving reasons, identify what you would capture as: a line; a point; a polygon.

4. Each group should have a representative who will take notes of the group discussions.

5. Leave time for questions for each group presentation.

6. When all groups have finished their presentation, conclude by briefly explaining the difference between point, lines and polygons; and how a point might be captured as a polygon and vice versa. Suggest further resources for clarification of any open questions.

NOTES

If there are fewer participants in this training activity, the trainer may choose to conduct the activity as a class activity.
